The Great Southern is the largest and most diverse region within Australia’s South West. It varies from unspoilt coastline, and idyllic seaside towns to sprawling agricultural lands and national parks harbouring some of the world’s rarest species.
Along the south coast, the sheer force of the Southern Ocean has sculptured a raw, dramatic coastline, creating some remarkable coastal scenery. The history of the region is equally as impressive, and for many reasons. King George Sound near Albany was the first European settlement in Western Australia, settled before the Swan River Colony in Perth. In addition, the area has significant ties to World War 1, with Albany being the departure point for the majority of ANZAC troops leaving for Europe.
The Great Southern is home to the largest wine producing region by area in Australia. The Great Southern is also the coolest growing region in WA, producing 37% of all grapes grown in the state. As with many wine producing regions, fresh produce is also plentiful, with self-guided gourmet tasting trails dotted everywhere.
Travel inland and follow winding rivers and streams, passing picturesque farmland and visiting pioneering farming communities to explore the region’s rich rural heritage. Taste delicately flavoured fine wines on a tour of the countryside around Mount Barker, Frankland, Denmark and the Porongurups. This area is rapidly establishing itself as one of Western Australia’s premier wine regions and there are also a number of olive groves, berry farms and honey producers here.
